It's ironic that one of my favorite things about Linux these days is the number of customization options you have for your desktop interface, but I always end up using Gnome. I'm super excited about this update. I'm weirdly extra excited about the Adwaita font of all things, because while I liked Inter, I was affected its accessibility issues. Adwaita is basically Inter Plus, and it looks fantastic, and it's just weird to be this excited about a font.
I personally use KDE on my laptop, but I would still recommend GNOME to anyone non-techy asking for a desktop environment. KDE is great for power users and I love the customizability but GNOME has been way more stable and polished to me. I absolutely love to see it become more viable of an alternative to the desktop environments of Mac and Windows, with all these news features.
HDR option is in the display settings, where the resolution and refresh rate is.
Gnome is a great DE. Now, after 3 years, forced to migrate to Windows, I have to recognize that Gnome is awsome!
I love Gnome design. Clean and simple.
I'm not sure if this mentioned in the video, but GNOME 48 or 49 will replace Evince with Papers as the default PDF document viewer. It has been confirmed that Ubuntu will do this in 25.04.
tbf it looks much better with that light off. I like the dramatic background, looks more cinematic
0:07 wait, what was on your agenda for the 17th?
7:17 "It's an old laptop (...) 3 or 4 years old" My 10 years old laptop that was gifted to me recently: yeah. old. 👍
Quite excited for this. Thanks to the community
I really appreciate this thorough look at Gnome 48. Gnome holds a special place as my first Linux love desktop environment. Though I'm currently hooked on KDE Plasma's customization and workflow, your review has me thinking about revisiting Gnome when I refresh my laptop. Thanks again, and I hope to resume posting my own Linux feeds soon. God bless,
I was a gnome user for a long time. It was the first DE I ever used on Linux. I like the eye candy while still keeping it clean and simple without looking dated or childish like LXDE or Xfce. That being said, I switched to Plasma a couple years ago because I got sick of extensions breaking with every minor update and half of them never getting updated and needing to find replacements. If they can fix their extension system to not break so easily I might switch back.
FINALLY we can configure displays from command line!
It's interesting to note that it took a while, but since GNOME 40, and in all subsequent versions (all of them, really), GNOME has gotten BETTER AND BETTER. Of course, there are necessary criticisms of the desktop, all desktops need and should be criticized in order to point out flaws that need to be corrected, but design is definitely something that GNOME has managed to perfect.
Gnome is so calming and relaxing. It keeps things minimal and stable, a quality that almost all other lacks. The centering of Windows natively and without tweaking is such a slick feature. Gonna spin a VM and jumping right into it.
7:21 old ryzen cpu? 3 or 4 years old? Bro clearly does not know the definition of old cpu
You say there are little visual changes but you didn't mention that the dark theme's colors were drastically changed, even though that's shown throughout the whole video.
Only 43 seconds after the video went live, and there are already spam comments
Pretty nice update, the eye reminders will be pretty handy
