That "crazy Russian" alphabet is called "Cyrillic" and has some commonality with the Greek alphabet due to its origins by the brothers Cyril and Methodius, who were Grecco Roman missionaries, who brought their religion to the Slavs in the year 862 and established this new alphabet to aid in their efforts to communicate with the people.
