Just for clarification,  yes obviously the numerator does NOT have to be > the denominator in criteria #1 and #2 since the cutoffs are 0.5 and 0.6, hence it can be a true exudative criteria even with a larger denominator than numerator. However, the point I was trying to illustrate is that as you increase the relative number of Protein or LDH (hence the numerator gets relatively larger, not necessarily larger than the denominator) you can better conceptualize the clinical context in which you'd have exudative effusions.
