Pushing the envelope in any context always generates offshoot technologies with unknown benefits.... Like, fusion research lead to really powerful compact microwave lasers, which are now being used potentially for extremely efficient and reliable super-deep drilling. A laser doesn't need to be replaced like a drill bit does after all. This MIGHT allow for the holy Grail of renewables; geothermal power at any point on the earths crust
