How to upgrade the IOS on a cisco router/switch

Before starting this procedure, make sure you have full reachability between your device and TFTP server, also make sure your image is combatible with the device you intend to upgrade and is not corrupted.
This is valid for 'classic' cisco routers and switches and not for those running IOS-XE or XR.
