If you are not a fan of the Windows taskbar thumbnail previews that you get when you hover over the open programs in the taskbar, then here is an easy way to disable them, even if you are using combine taskbar buttons and hide labels option. This way, you will see a list of the open apps when you hover over them on the taskbar.

Open the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Taskband
Create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value called NumThumbnails
Double click it and set the value to 0
Reboot your computer
