Real Numbers | Class 10 | Rituraj Sir | Indush Study Circle
Welcome to the Real Numbers chapter with Rituraj Sir on the Indush Study Circle platform! This chapter is the foundation of higher mathematical concepts and helps students build a strong understanding of numbers beyond the basic ones they have learned so far.
What Are Real Numbers?
Real numbers include all the numbers we use in our daily lives, such as whole numbers, fractions, and decimals. They consist of:
Natural Numbers (N): The counting numbers (1, 2, 3, …).
Whole Numbers (W): Natural numbers along with zero (0, 1, 2, 3, …).
Integers (Z): Whole numbers and their negative counterparts (… -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3 …).
Rational Numbers (Q): Numbers that can be written in the form of p/q, where p and q are integers, and q ≠ 0.
Irrational Numbers (Q’): Numbers that cannot be written as fractions, such as the square root of 2 and π (pi).
Key Concepts Covered in This Chapter
✅ Euclid’s Division Lemma
Euclid, the Greek mathematician, gave a method to find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of two numbers using division. This concept is helpful in number theory and has real-world applications.
✅ Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic
This theorem states that every composite number can be uniquely expressed as a product of prime numbers. It helps in factorization, which is useful in solving many mathematical problems.
✅ Irrational Numbers
Numbers like √2, √3, and π do not terminate or repeat in decimal form, making them irrational. This chapter explains why some numbers cannot be expressed as fractions.
✅ Decimal Expansion of Rational and Irrational Numbers
Rational numbers have either terminating or repeating decimal expansions.
Irrational numbers have non-terminating, non-repeating decimal expansions.
✅ HCF and LCM Using Prime Factorization
Understanding Highest Common Factor (HCF) and Least Common Multiple (LCM) helps solve problems involving ratios, fractions, and real-life applications such as time and work.
Why Is This Chapter Important?
It strengthens the basic concepts of number systems, which are essential for higher mathematics.
It helps in solving problems related to divisibility, factors, and multiples.
It introduces prime factorization, which is widely used in algebra, cryptography, and computer science.
This chapter lays the foundation for algebra, geometry, and calculus, making it an important topic for students preparing for board exams and competitive exams like JEE and NEET.
