Why did Vikramaditya kill his own wife and run away from the palace? When he returned to the palace, his mental peace was disturbed. He always remained restless and unhappy. He lost interest in worldly pleasures and a feeling of renunciation arose in his mind. He felt that there was definitely some deficiency in his religious duties due to which God did this to him. Thinking all this, Vikramaditya handed over the responsibility of the kingdom to his ministers and himself set out for penance on the seashore. On reaching the seashore, he first stood on one leg and invoked the Sea God. Pleased with his meditation, when the Sea God appeared before him, he said to the Sea God that O Lord, I want to do uninterrupted meditation here, so please bless me to complete my meditation without any obstacles. The Sea God gave him a conch and said that whenever any divine calamity comes, it will go away with the sound of this conch. Taking the gift from the Sea God, Vikram thanked him and bowed down and built a hut on the seashore and started meditation.
