What is an anti-clerical Muslim philosopher? Could there even be such a thing? If not the clergy, if not the clerical establishment, then what shape can an Islamic government take?
In the spirit of full disclosure, Iran's Dr. Ali Shariati (the subject of this interview) only vaguely answers this question. Regardless, my guest and I examine Dr. Shariati's journey from Iran to Paris, to Indonesia and, finally, to Damascus. It's the journey of an Iranian intellectual who becomes an anti-clerical Muslim philosopher.
One thing is for sure... Dr. Shariati's Islamic alternative to Iran's Islamic Republic is revolutionary, anti-colonial and emancipatory.
