On Tuesday, the 129th Constitutional Amendment Bill for the simultaneous elections was introduced in the Lok Sabha. After fierce debate and voting on the motion of introduction, the One Nation, One Election Bill was introduced. However, this does not end the tussle between the treasury and the opposition bench. The bill will have to pass through multiple stages and will have to stand the tests in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha

The proposed change aims to align elections nationwide, a practice followed until 1967.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah was part of a high-level committee, chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, which recommended conducting Lok Sabha, state assembly, and local body elections simultaneously in a phased manner.

During the consultation process on the "One Nation, One Election" initiative, Kovind revealed that 32 parties supported the proposal, while 15 opposed it.

Last week, the Union Cabinet approved the plan to hold simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies but decided to defer a decision on including local body polls for now.

Simultaneous elections were held in India between 1951 and 1967. The concept has been revisited in several reports and studies since 1983, advocating a return to this earlier practice of conducting polls concurrently.
