The word ocean is derived from the Greek word okeanos which literally means great stream encircling the earth’s disc.
In all we have five oceans. In this video we shall look at their origin.
First we shall start with our own ocean the Indian Ocean which is the only Ocean named after a sub-continent.
The Pacific Ocean got its name from Ferdinand Magellan on his encountering calm seas during his voyage. So Pacific is in reality a manifestation of calmness. It is derived from the word Mar Pacifico.
Atlantic Ocean gets its name from the Atlas Mountains in Africa and later it was extended to the water mass all around it. It originates from the Greek word Atlanticos. In fact the word atlas is also got from this source.
The last two oceans the Arctic and Antarctic refer to opposites one in the Northern hemisphere and the other in the Southern hemisphere. The Arctic Ocean is derived from two words namely Arktos and Ursa and has its name linked to Greek mythology. It refers to a bear and pole star. It is the water body near the North Pole.
On the other hand the Antarctic is the opposite and does not have any myths related to it. It is also referred to as the Southern Ocean reflecting its position in the Southern hemisphere.
In conclusion we can say that oceans are not just huge masses of water in fact our every breath depends on them. The Phytoplankton is responsible for one in every five breaths that a human takes.
Let us pledge to save our oceans from pollution and live an eco friendly life. #Videos #History #CBSE #Trendingvideos #Education #Educationalvideos
