Does All-In-One Paint ACTUALLY Work?!

Also answering the question - do I need to sand something before I paint it? Using a glossy piece of furniture, I tested:
Painting directly over it without sanding, with a paint and primer in one.
Painting directly over it without sanding, with primer then paint.
Sanding and then painting over it, with a paint and primer in one.
Sanding and then painting over it, with primer and then paint.
