Flooding Causes Chaos After Month’s Rain Falls in a Day
Unprecedented Downpour
“Imagine a month’s worth of rain falling in just one day!”
Central and southern England faced severe flooding on Monday after more than a month’s worth of rain fell within 24 hours. The London fire brigade received hundreds of calls about flooding-related incidents, including rescues from cars and homes. A massive sinkhole appeared on the pitch at AFC Wimbledon’s stadium, leading to match postponements. The Met Office issued an amber weather alert, predicting significant travel disruptions and school closures due to the torrential downpours.
Widespread Impact
The heavy rainfall affected a vast area, with many places receiving between 60mm and 80mm of rain, and some areas up to 120mm. The Environment Agency issued 22 flood warnings and 86 alerts, particularly in central and southern England. Schools in Bedfordshire closed, and services on the London Overground and some tube lines were suspended. Homes in the Midlands and south-west England experienced power outages due to the severe weather.
Community Response
Residents and emergency services worked tirelessly to manage the flooding. Sandbags were distributed, and firefighters attended numerous incidents, including people trapped in cars and homes. The Met Office predicted a brief reprieve from the rain on Tuesday but warned of potential heavy rainfall later in the week, with temperatures expected to drop below average due to northerly winds.
