The Pluri-national State of Bolivia lies south and east of Brazil in the middle of South America. Once part of the Inca Empire Bolivia gained its independence from Spain in 1825. The country name should sound familiar, if you’ve been paying attention, Bolivia is named after Simón Bolívar the military leader who helped win independence for Venezuela. Bolivia calls their currency the Boliviano.
The front of the paper 2018 5 Bolivianos portrays three people; Drum Major Jose Santos Vargas who fought in the revolution made famous for his diary during the war, messianic leader Apiaguaiki Tupa a national hero for his struggle to defend his peoples' land and liberty, and Eustaquio El Moto Mendez who fought in the war for independence. Pictured center is the Caverna de Umajalanta, located near Toronto, a series of underground tunnels and caves that stretch for 2.8 miles. There is a holographic interwoven security strip with a 10 and the likeness of Jose Santos Vargas who is also portrayed in the water mark. The security strip turns blue/green with UV light displaying embedded security threads.
The reverse features a giant hummingbird and also as a holographic image to the right. Also displayed is Puya Raimondii, also known as ‘Queen of the Andes’, it’s the largest species of bromeliad, a large flowering plant, that reaches over 40 feet in height. The background is the Isla del Pescado which is one of many ‘islands’ on the high Andean salt flat called Salar de Uyuni.
