A Virginia high school track athlete who hit a competitor with a baton mid-race is facing an assault-and-battery charge, local media said on Wednesday, March 12.
Video of the girls’ 4x200m relay final at the Virginia State High School League indoor state championships shows one sprinter strike another as they run side by side around a bend in the track. The runner who was struck quickly exits the race as the other runner continues.
Alaila Everett, from IC Norcom High School in Portsmouth, said that she hit Kaelen Tucker, from Brookville High School, by accident. Everett said she hit Tucker after the two runners made contact and she lost her balance, according to an interview with a local TV station.
Tucker said she was diagnosed with a concussion and possible skull fracture, according to local reports.
The Lynchburg Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office charged Everett with misdemeanor assault and battery, according to local reports.
