Olympics
Every four years the entire world of sport waits with bated breath to witness the event which features athletes and sporting personalities of every nook and corner.
Here we shall trace the origin of this Games and reveal some interesting anecdotes about it.
The origin of the games dates back to 8th century B.C and was conducted in honour of the Greek God Zeus. Basically it was a religious festival and held at Olympia. The athletes who participated were all males and came from every corner of the Greek empire.
The sanctuary as it was called was named Mt. Olympos the highest mountain in Greece and also because it was considered the home of the Greek Gods and Goddesses.
The first race to be held was in 776B.C called the stadion race. It was a foot race 600ft long. Some sources say this was the only athletic event held for a long time. The Games were held in Olympia every four years for almost 12 centuries.
The first modern day Olympics was held in Athens in the year1896 almost 1503 years after it was started.Baron Pierre de Courbetin a Frenchman is given the credit for having restarted the games in the modern era. Delegates from 34 countries participated in the preliminary meeting to restart the games and though Courbetin wanted to hold it in Paris his homeland the delegates convinced him to move it to Athens.
The idea of the Olympic flame had its birth in the games at Amsterdam in 1928 but the modern torch relay was inaugurated in Berlin in1936, The Olympic oath was instituted in 1920.
Initially the ancient games was a five day programme and today it is a fortnightly e vent.
The idea of holding the Winter Olympics came to the fray in1924 and from 1994 it was decided to alternate the summer and winter games.
The Olympic flag was instituted in 1908 using the primary colours which would be found in every country’s flag. The five rings represent the continents and their unity. The motto Citius ,Altius Fortius
Meaning Faster, Higher and Stronger have motivated athletes and sportsmen and women all over the world to achieve new landmarks in their fields of specialization.
In addition to this the Olympics have added a nother feather to their cap by introducing the Paralympics Olympics.
The entire event is of such a magnificent nature that organizing it is no easy task. This is done by the International Olympic association with representatives from all countries. This association is the parent body with the countries associations affiliated to it. They exercise immense influence and are well financed and equipped to handle this event.
