LAYA " ଲୟ " (Definition & Types)#OdissiDance #OdissiDanceTutorial #IndianClassicalDance #OdissiDanc
In Odissi dance, Laya (ଲୟ) refers to the tempo or rhythm of the performance. It plays a crucial role in maintaining synchronization between the dancer’s movements and the accompanying music. There are three main types of Laya in Odissi:

1. Vilambit Laya (Slow Tempo) – The movements are graceful, expansive, and deliberate, allowing the dancer to express deep emotions. This is often used in invocatory pieces like Mangalacharan or slow Abhinaya.
Generally this is the Eka gun of Taal.

2. Madhya Laya (Medium Tempo) – This is a moderate speed that balances between expression and rhythm. Many Odissi compositions, such as Pallavi, are performed in this laya.
Generally this is the dui gun of Taal.

3. Druta Laya (Fast Tempo) – The movements are quick, energetic, and dynamic. It is often seen in the climax of a dance sequence or fast-paced sections of Pallavi and Moksha.
Generally this is the chari gun of Taal.
