I walked into the courtroom, shackled at my wrists and ankles. The whole room was packed. News cameras were flashing. I saw my lawyer talking with the judge and the DA.

She came over to me, and I could tell something was wrong. Her eyes were wide. She said, “I don’t want to scare you, but the judge and DA are thinking about amending your charges to homicide.”

The man they said I stabbed was still in a coma. They didn’t think he was going to make it. That was the first thing I heard in court. I couldn’t even process it—it didn’t feel real.

Some moments hit you so hard, you just freeze. But even in those moments, you’ve got to keep moving forward.
