Chitragupta is said to be the son of Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe. Once, as Lord Brahma was performing a yajna sacred ritual, drops of his sweat fell onto the ground. From these drops, a man and a woman were born. The man was named Chitragupta, and the woman was named Nandini. Chitragupta was born with immense knowledge and wisdom.

Chitragupta, being a divine being, possessed the unique ability to keep records of all the deeds and actions of every living being on Earth. Impressed by his abilities, Lord Yama, the god of death and the ruler of the afterlife, requested Chitragupta to assist him in the task of maintaining the accounts of karma. Chitragupta agreed and became Yama's chief assistant, responsible for recording the deeds of all individuals throughout their lives.n Hindu mythology, Chitragupta is a deity who is believed to be responsible for keeping records of the actions, deeds, and karma of all beings on Earth. He is often depicted as an assistant to Yama, the god of death and the ruler of the afterlife. Chitragupta is believed to maintain an account of every individual's actions during their lifetime, which determines their fate in the afterlife.

According to Hindu beliefs, after a person dies, their soul is taken to the realm of Yama for judgment. Chitragupta then presents the detailed account of the person's actions, both good and bad, and based on this record, Yama decides the appropriate rewards or punishments for the soul in their next life or in the afterlife.

Chitragupta is sometimes referred to as "the divine scribe" or "the recorder of deeds" because of his role in meticulously recording the actions of every individual. He is often depicted as having a pen and a book, symbolizing his task of maintaining the cosmic record of karma.

Chitragupta is primarily venerated in certain regions of India, particularly in communities that follow the belief in karma and reincarnation, as well as in the context of rituals performed for ancestors. He is not a major deity in Hinduism but holds a significant place in the religious imagination as the one who helps determine the fate of souls after death based on their deeds in life.

Based on the records he keeps, Chitragupta is responsible for assessing the karma actions and their consequences of individuals. This assessment plays a crucial role in determining the nature of the next life or the experiences a soul will have in the afterlife.

In some Hindu traditions, Chitragupta is invoked during ancestral worship and rituals. Devotees believe that by appeasing him and seeking his blessings, the souls of their departed ancestors can find favorable conditions in the afterlife.

Chitragupta's duties are centered around the idea of cosmic justice and accountability. His role underscores the belief in karma and reincarnation, where individual actions shape one's destiny across lifetimes. While Chitragupta may not be as prominent as major deities like Vishnu or Shiva, his significance lies in his responsibility for maintaining the ethical and karmic fabric of the universe.
