Khorramabad... But Where is Everyone???

In the 16th episode of Paths Less Traveled - Iran, I’m coming towards the end of this epic trip, heading towards the Kurdish North of Iran.

On the way to Khorramabad (خرم‌آباد) we stop of at Aligudarz (اليگودرز), completely off the tourist trail before heading on to Khorramabad itself.

We start with the iconic site of Khorramabad, Shapur Khast (Falakol aflak) - قلعه فلک ‌الافلاک دژ شاپور خواست The huge castle dating to the 3rd century, overlooking the river & city.

Coming back down from the castle, we find a very quiet city, there's few people on the streets and the bazaar is mostly closed. Thankfully we find the restaurant Gap Bath open for a lunch of Kanje, the local veal kebab.

There was really little life on the streets around the center so we headed up to "The Roof" Bam Khorramabad for some spectacular views over the city.

Finally we found where people were at the lovely Keeyow Lake (گلال کی), a relaxed area with sports, table tennis, boats and just general sitting around and chilling. I opted for the less relaxing activity of a speed boat ride around the lake!

After that it was back to the hotel to visit the nearby kebab institution that is Uncle Abbas Traditional Barbecue (کبابی سنتی عمو عباس). Kebab is a huge thing here and it's hard to find much else!

Either way, the Kase (kebab bowl) was a great way to end a somewhat strange day.

Although we didn't think much at the time of the quietness in the center, this was really the start of the area (and part of the trip) that was more heavily affected by the protests. This became very much more apparent on my next stops (and videos) in Kermanshah and Hamedan.

PATHS LESS TRAVELED

In the late summer of 2022 I embarked on an epic road trip around Iran, during a time of unrest as protests escalated across the country.

Covering around 6200km over 24 days, I was able to see this incredible country in a way that many are not fortunate enough to see, and to record my experiences in a way that has not been done before.

Safety concerns meant that I had to limit my filming on occasion, and stay well away from any signs of the troubles going on.

However, what I did see was an incredible insight. Some of the most wonderful and welcoming people, incredible history and culture, and mind blowing food.

Paths Less Traveled - Iran is my story of my experiences, put in an in-depth series of Iran travel vlogs.
