Filmed by Durban North Based Chiropractor Dr Grant Harper with a GoPro on a homemade extender pole made of PVC piping.

This spot is very fickle and only works a few times each year, it is located right in front of the Oyster Box Hotel just across from Umhlanga Promenade and the landmark Umhlanga Lighthouse.

It is in close proximity to the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel built by Sol Kerzner and the well know Cabana Brach Hotel and Umhlanga Sands.

Development in Umhlanga has exploded the last couple of years with the Pearls Umhlanga Development and the R4-billion Oceans Umhlanga Development by Vivian Reddy which features the Raddison Blu Hotel and Soul Surf Shop.

Umhlanga (Zulu: uMhlanga) is a residential, commercial and resort town north of Durban on the coast of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It is part of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, which was created in 2000 and includes the greater Durban area. The name means "place of reeds" in the Zulu language, and the correct pronunciation of "hl" in Umhlanga is similar to the Welsh "ll". It is bordered by Durban North to the south and Mount Edgecombe to the west.

Umhlanga derives its name from the Zulu language and means "place of reeds", referring to the beds of reeds growing along the Ohlanga River north of Umhlanga Rocks.

The Oyster Box, a luxury hotel since the 1950s, was built as a beach cottage in 1869, before the town had even been founded.

The Oyster Box is a luxury five-star hotel in Umhlanga, just north of Durban, South Africa. It is known for its spa and the outdoor pools which have views on the Indian Ocean.

The cottage, originally called Oyster Lodge, was built in 1863 with teak, corrugated iron and reinforced concrete. In 1952, the hotel was bought by Ken and Kay O’Connor (brother and sister) who turned it into a tea garden, then a restaurant, and finally a hotel in March 1954.

The Oyster hotel has always been the official custodian of the Umhlanga lighthouse.

In 2006, the hotel, then owned by Wayne Reed, was bought by Stanley and Bea Tollman of Red Carnation Hotels. Renovation work lasted from 2007 to 2009.
In October 2016, the South African version of the Monopoly, Monopoly Mzansi, included the Oyster Box as one of the country's top 22 locations and the only hotel in the game.

Waves suitable for surfing are primarily found on ocean shores, but can also be found in standing waves in the open ocean, in lakes, in rivers in the form of a tidal bore, or in wave pools.

A surfboard is a narrow plank used in surfing. Surfboards are relatively light, but are strong enough to support an individual standing on them while riding an ocean wave. They were invented in ancient Hawaii, where they were known as papa he'e nalu in the Hawaiian language, they were usually made of wood from local trees, such as koa, and were often over 460 cm (15 ft) in length and extremely heavy. Major advances over the years include the addition of one or more fins (skegs) on the bottom rear of the board to improve directional stability, and numerous improvements in materials and shape.

Modern surfboards are made of polyurethane or polystyrene foam covered with layers of fiberglass cloth, and polyester or epoxy resin. The result is a light and strong surfboard that is buoyant and maneuverable. Recent developments in surfboard technology have included the use of carbon fiber and kevlar composites, as well as experimentation in biodegradable and ecologically friendly resins made from organic sources.

GoPro was founded by Nick Woodman in 2002. He was motivated by a 2002 surfing trip to Australia in which he was hoping to capture high quality action photos, but could not because amateur photographers could not get close enough or buy appropriate quality equipment at reasonable prices.

The 'GoPro' name came about as Woodman and his surfing friends all aspired to become professional surfers as 'going pro' was the ultimate goal and the only way to be filmed on the water at that time. The camera range was branded 'Hero' as their aim was to capture close-up action shots that made the subject look like a her
