Millport is the only town on the island of Great Cumbrae in the Firth of Clyde off the coast of mainland Scotland.
The island offers views across to the Isle of Arran as well as of its smaller neighbour which lies barely a kilometre away, called Little Cumbrae.
The population is around 1400.

In 1844 two young midshipman from the Shearwater, Charles Cayley and William Jewell, borrowed a small sailing boat to amuse themselves. They were out near the north end of Cumbrae when a strong north-east wind caught them and drove their boat bow-first under the waves taking the boys with it....their bodies were never found.
