The power slide is the safest way for you to stop when you’re skating fast in the streets. Here’s how to learn it in 5 easy steps:
1. Lunge position: this is the most important step. You need to be comfortable in this position so practice until you are comfortable and low enough. It’s the same as a regular lunge but you’re on skates
2. Scissor your skates and rotate the back skate. Your heels should be facing each other. This is easy when you’re in a curve so make sure to turn around something. Bend your knees to make this easier
3. Transfer your weight to the back leg. After rotating the back leg, make sure to put all your weight on the back leg so that the front leg can start to slide as you are turning
4. Twist your hips: combine everything you’ve learned so far but this time with a quick movement twist your hips. You will be sliding if you are low enough
5. Push with your heel: this will make you go in a straight line instead of turning. The harder you push the quicker you’ll stop
