One of my favorite games on the original Nintendo Entertainment System was Duck Hunt. Sure, the gameplay was basic, but I always had fun playing it. One bummer is that you can't play it on a modern, flat-panel television on original NES Hardware (unless you use the Hyperkin adapter). Thankfully, Nintendo actually ported Duck Hunt to the Wii U, and you can use your Wii Remotes to aim and I have to say it was super fun! Given the fact that the Nintendo Switch and Switch OLED has the camera in the right Joy-Con I would have figured that Nintendo would have ported Duck Hunt to the system. But they didn't. So I just fired up my Wii U to play it for a little bit and also wanted to see if some of the old NES Tricks still worked.
Duck Hunt on the Wii U Virtual Console brings back the fun of the NES original, but with a twist! We're using the Wii Remote to simulate the classic Zapper, and in this video, we're putting it to the test. Does it capture the same feel? Is it accurate? We had to get armed up and hunt some virtual ducks while exploring how this retro classic plays on the Wii U.
One thing I was curious about was whether or not you could still control the Ducks with the player 2 controller. This was something my brother did to me all the time to frustrate the daylights out of me. I powered up both Wii Remotes and started a game. I had forgotten that the Wii Remote Speaker mimics the sounds from an actual NES Zapper; TOO COOL! After shooting down a few ducks, I grabbed the Player 2 controller and started messing with the D-Pad. To my surprise, this trick still worked on the Wii U version! I had forgotten all about this!
It's a real disappointment that this classic from days gone by never got a remake or a port, and even worse that you can no longer buy it on the Wii U. With the removal of the camera from the Switch 2 Joy-Cons it doesn't look like we'll get a port there either. Did you ever purchase it on the eShop when it was available? Did you know player 2 could control the ducks? Let me know in the comments!
