The Indian Trail Blazer in Asronomy.
India is the home of many firsts and astronomy is one of them. When we talk of the science of astronomy the first name that comes to mind is that of Aryabhatta.
We share some of the lesser known and interesting facts about this astronomer.
He was born in 476 A.D. and lived during the Gupta Age. It is a well known fact that this period was termed as the Golden period in Indian History and rightly so since most of the famous inventions and treatises on different subjects were written I this age.
He is credited with the founding of zero and to this day the number system owes its recognition to him and also the place value system.
He also calculated the value of pi.
He also gave us the insight that the moon has no light of its own and that eclipses were caused because of the shadow of the earth and not because of the planet Rahu as was believed.
Aryabhatta also gave the positions of the planets and also the distance between them and in fact even measured their orbits correctly.
He also was able to give correct predictions regarding planetary positions and to this day the Hindu calendar (panchang) is set with the calculations he made years ago.
He also gave the solution to the variant equation as he was well versed in mathematics as well as astronomy.
He also told us that the earth was round and rotated on its own axis and as a result days and nights were caused.
He stated correctly that a year had 365 days and also that a week consisted of seven days and in order to adjust the seasons one month had to be added to make the days correct and hence the leap year as we know it.
He said the yuga, the day, the year, the month all began all together at the beginning of the bright fortnight of caitra.
Time has a beginning or end and is measured by the movement of the planets and asterisms on the sphere.
He accurately measured the radius of the earth and the distance of the orbit of the planets from the earth.
He wrote two books Aryabhatia and Aryabhatta Siddanta.
He also is credited with talking about trigonometry having discovered the cos and sine values.
India honoured this illustrious son by naming a satellite after him and also releasing a two rupee note and a postage stamp.
Overall it must be said that in a day where science and technology were almost nil Aryabhatta’s contribution is worth its weight in gold. #theopenbook #Education #Educationalvideos #Studyiq #learn #Cbse #icse #ssc #generalknowledge
