How to Start Running (By a Physical Therapist and Run Coach)

Many people are getting into running these days - and this is awesome! Running is a wonderful sport/hobby to get into for your health and well-being.

As a physical therapist and run coach, part of my role is to help new runners avoid common mistakes that lead to injury or consistency.

Because as new runners, we see and like the end-product.

✅”I’d like to run some local 5K’s to help me stay active.”
✅”Debra from down the street is running 5 miles every morning! I want to be like her!”
✅”Marathons look fun. I want to run one!”

And two paths can result from this:

1. Overestimating our abilities - trying to run as fast or as long as we can every day which leads to injury
2. Underestimating our abilities - thinking that it looks too hard, we don’t have what it takes, so we don’t even try

Good news is, there’s a third path!

This path involves starting and building up wisely. A wise approach leads to enjoyment which leads to consistency which leads to results.

More good news is - you can start the right way, right away! You don’t have to learn the hard way (as I did years ago in all my overestimating my own abilities ways).

Start wisely, and trust me when I say - your future running self will thank you.
