The Middle Age
The fall of the Roman Empire marked the beginning of a new age in the history of Europe and most historians refer to it as the Dark Ages or the Middle Age.
The name Dark Age was given by the Italian scholar and poet Petrarch as during this time he felt Latin literature and art were declining. This has come under question as the name is used to denote the period from5th to 10th centuries where there were intermittent periods of intellectual advance and periods of lull. Today it is considered derogatory to say Dark Age.
What exactly happened during this time is what we shall see now.
The early medieval period was marked by the adherence to Christianity.
But there were numerous forms of Christianity as there were countries.
All documents scripts were oral in nature in the sense that people could reel out details of manuscripts, land deeds, epics from memory. In fact for days on end the scop or minstrel would recite an epic without making any errors or loss of memory.
The establishment of monasteries allowed education within the walls and some sophisticated theological literature were published within the monasteries.
This period also saw British art flourishing. The Anglo-Saxon jewelry and other pieces of art showed how good these people were with art and craft and also how the coming of Christianity gave them new challenges.
Though they had never made books before within two generations they learnt to make wonderful manuscripts. They also started a new form of art.
Agriculture seems to have also advanced during this period.
It is also said that there was a period where the temperatures were warmer than before.
Advances in science and math were also made and it’s a misnomer to say that the church did not encourage research.
This was the age of the coming of Islam and there were many wars fought to regain supremacy causing lot of unrest and bloodshed. This is probably the reason why little is known of the happenings of this period
With many periods in history, it can be difficult to find something new to explore or write about. Not so with the early medieval period. There are relatively few early medievalists, and a wealth of research still to be done. What’s more, advances in archaeology are only recently bringing information to light about how people in this period lived. When societies build more in timber than in stone, it can be hard to find evidence in the archaeological record, but more is coming to light now than ever before. #Education #Educationalvideos #CBSE #Theopenbook
