The Indian Movie Moghul
Dhundiraj Govind Phalke better known as Dadasaheb Phalke has the distinction of being the pioneer of the movie making industry in India.
The video attempts to throw light on some of the lesser known and interesting facts about this great personality without whom the pleasures of watching films on the big screen may have never been a reality in India.
Born in 1870 this film maker had a natural flair for doing things differently even as a student at the J.J School of Art as early as 1885. At that tender age he experimented with special effects and learnt magic. He also met the German magician Carl Hertz who was one of the many magicians employed by Luminere Brothers.
His life took a different turn when he had the opportunity to see a silent movie by Ferdinand Zecca. This gave rise to his first creation on Indian Gods the Growth of a Pea Plant a short film.
From there was no looking back for this visual visionary and soon India witnessed its first ever movie Raja Harischandra. His wife and son ably supported him in the making of the film. He even had posters and advertisements for good looking and handsome faces to act in the film.
He was so intense in his desire to make films that he would spend hours of viewing and it is said that he temporarily became blind. His vision was later restored.
He visited Germany to learn the nuances of experimental film making and came back more equipped. He bought his first movie camera too there. The result for India was some immortal creations in the silent era.
In total he made95 movies and 25 short films in a career spanning 19 years.
The government of India introduced the Dadasaheb Phalke award for outstanding contribution to Indian cinema in the year 1969 and the doyens of the industry vie with each other to receive it in their lifetime. A postage stamp to commemorate his memory was released in the year1971 and a lifetime achievement award from the Dadasaheb Phalke academy is also given in his memory.
It can be said that in an era where science and technology had its beginnings to be able to achieve this is in itself an honour . No wonder all movie buffs both stars and viewers alike look up to this name with adoration and reverence. #theopenbook #Education #Educationalvideos #Studyiq #learn #Cbse #icse #ssc #generalknowledge
